George L. Bakris, M.D., is Professor of Medicine, Director of the Comprehensive Hypertension Center and member of the Committees on Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics and on Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition at the University of Chicago. His contributions to clinical research and trials, along with their translation to practice, particularly in the areas of hypertension, diabetic kidney disease, and kidney disease progression are extraordinary. He has served as president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, the American Society of Hypertension, has advised the FDA and CMS, has shaped national guidelines for treatment of hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease and has published over 1000 peer-reviewed papers. Among many honors, he is the recipient of the 2019 Irvine Page-Alva Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award from the AHA Council on Hypertension. His grand rounds talk will describe how data from studies of individual agents affecting markers such as albuminuria and blood pressure were woven together to design an industry- supported cardiorenal outcome trial with practice-changing results.
