SUPERHERO: Transforming Youth-onset Hypertension Research Through Data and Collaboration

Summary

The SUPERHERO Registry, led by Dr. Andrew Michael South at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, is an innovative, multi-site project advancing research and treatment of youth-onset hypertension. By connecting hospitals across North America, the registry collects and analyzes clinical data, powered by strong partnerships with the Wake Forest CTSI Informatics and Biostatistical Support teams. Organic interest has fueled its expansion into a clinical trial network. With anticipated NIH funding, SUPERHERO exemplifies how collaboration and informatics can transform pediatric care and shape healthier futures.

The Study of the Epidemiology of Pediatric Hypertension (SUPERHERO) is a groundbreaking, multi-site research initiative led by Andrew Michael South, M.D., Associate Professor of Pediatric Nephrology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Designed to better understand high blood pressure in children and adolescents, the SUPERHERO registry brings together hospitals and healthcare systems from across the United States and North America to rigorously collect and analyze real-world clinical data.
At its core, SUPERHERO seeks to answer critical questions:

  • How do hypertension disorders affect youth differently than adults?
  • What are the long-term impacts on heart and kidney health?
  • Which treatments lead to the best outcomes?

By examining large-scale data from diverse populations, the project aims to advance evidence-based care and improve long-term health for young people living with high blood pressure.
