Goal #8: Foster the development of the emerging field of translational science

“Community-engaged research” has become a buzzword in translational research, but what does it mean in practice?&nbsp;Finding out was the aim of Laboni Hoque, M.D., a 2024 graduate of Harvard Medical School (HMS), when she signed up for a practice placement through Harvard Catalyst’s Community Engagement Program (CEP). Embedded with The Community Builders (TCB), a housing non-profit dedicated to developing high-quality affordable homes for families, seniors, and people with disabilities, Dr. Hoque got a crash course in how to build community engagement – and how not to. She then applied those learnings to her senior scholarly project at the same organization two years later.&nbsp;The work earned her the Robert Ebert Prize for Health Care Delivery Research or Service, awarded annually at the Soma Weiss Student Research Day. Next up is residency in internal medicine at Yale Medical School. Goal #3: Address health disparities 

Health equity has always been a passion for <a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/doctors-departments/eileen-wang" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Eileen Wang, M.D., M.P.H.</a>, allergist and immunologist at <a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">National Jewish Health</a>. This passion motivated her to partner with <a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/education/morgridge-academy/bios/jennifer-mccullough" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jennifer McCullough, M.S.Ed.</a>, to develop a program to help enable students at <a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/education/morgridge-academy/about-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Morgridge Academy</a> to self-manage their asthma.&nbsp;Wang and McCullough recently learned they will receive the Community Engagement Partnership Grant from the <a href="https://cctsi.cuanschutz.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI)</a>, which will fund the pilot study for their new program. The program aims to empower the students and help them build self-efficacy.&nbsp;Morgridge Academy is a day school on the National Jewish Health campus for children in kindergarten through eighth grade diagnosed with chronic diseases. Seventy-three percent of Morgridge students have asthma. And many have multiple serious, chronic health conditions, which are difficult to manage in a typical school setting.
