Goal #1: Advance clinical and translational science

The surge in RSV cases following the COVID-19 pandemic may have been, in part, caused by increased testing and changes to the RSV genome, according to a Northwestern Medicine study <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-47757-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">published</a> in Nature Communications.&nbsp;Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.&nbsp;“It’s actually a really common cause of respiratory tract infections in the United States and has particularly high disease burden in young kids, older adults and the immunocompromised,” said <a href="https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/faculty-profiles/az/profile.html?xid=41989" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Judd Hultquist, Ph.D.</a>, assistant professor of <a href="https://www.medicine.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Medicine</a> in the <a href="https://www.medicine.northwestern.edu/divisions/infectious-diseases/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Division of Infectious Diseases</a> and senior author of the study. “Most children, by the time they’re age two, have already had it and it’s a virus that we’re continually infected with over the course of our lives…”&nbsp;Read the fill article <a href="https://news.feinberg.northwestern.edu/2024/05/29/study-examines-surge-in-rsv-cases-after-the-covid-19-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>.

Goal #7:  Training and career support programs for translational scientists

When you start a conversation with Jennifer Villwock, M.D., FAAOA, about her research, you need to specify which project you are inquiring about. Dr. Villwock is inquisitive about how things work and has an array of interests, which matches her research perfectly.&nbsp;The first project she is working on is with the Institute for Advancing Medical Innovations (IAMI) on commercializing the olfactory work she has been doing which uses patterns of responses on olfactory testing to help predict different disease states. She submitted a couple of grants on the small business side of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support the work in both Alzheimer’s disease and dementias, as well as traumatic brain injury.&nbsp;“This has been a new experience for me because you do not get a lot of entrepreneurial exposure working in science. It is not part of our formalized training,” Dr. Villwock said. “It has been great working with people (at IAMI) that the entrepreneurial side of things are in their wheelhouse and learning from them.
